We recently got an Ooma Hub telephone system over here. My first impression of it was positive. Although the Hub systems are no longer in production (replaced by the Tela system), the Hub performs excellently. It took about 10 minutes to set up (since we have a more complex networking system on our end), but following the instructions in the accompanying manual got us going quickly. The quality of the calls were way above and beyond other VOIP services (ViaTalk, Vongage, etc), and performed equally well during peak hours.

Ooma offers a premier plan for $10 a month, but the basic has all of the regular features you would expect in a normal landline. Their premier features include everything mentioned here. With the Hub system you don’t have to pay the yearly federal phone tax, which runs you about $12 a year with the Tela system. Even if you have to pay that, come on, it’s $1/month. Their systems give you “unlimited minutes” (with a hard cap at 5000 minutes). All in all, for a replacement to the land line, it is a very inexpensive way to get unlimited minutes with great quality on the calls.
